About the event

Sea Deep is coming to a beach near you! Join us for a guided Easter Egg Case Hunt where we will search the shore for shark and skate egg cases

Egg cases, better known as ‘mermaids’ purses’, are the empty cases of egg-laying sharks and skates. Once the shark pup has emerged, the empty egg case often gets washed up on the beach and can be found among the seaweed in the strand line. These cases can be identified to the exact species that laid them, which provides important information on the different kinds of sharks and skates in our seas, and where their spawning and nursery grounds may be.

Egg case hunting is great fun and you'll be helping shark conservation at the same time. Recording where different types of egg cases are found helps us to find out more about our egg-laying sharks and their pups. We can use this information to protect these areas, known as shark nursery grounds.

If you can't join us on the Easter Egg Case Trail, don't worry, you can still take part! There is a free and easy 'How To' Guide on our website to help you organise your own egg case hunt available here
